After Alu Innovations repaired our roof so quickly and easily, we turned our attention to the wine area around Stellenbosch. An absolute recommendation as a starting point is the Orange-Ville Guesthouse & Campsite between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Hardy and Steffi are perfect hosts and in addition their guesthouse is ideally located for tastings.
Walking and Wining in Stellenbosch
Hardy is happy to drive you to the Tokara vineyard. There you can taste wine and also fantastic olive oil. The vineyard is rather modern and the building impresses with exposed concrete and scores with a great view. The footpath of the Walking and Wining concept leads through various vineyards back to the guesthouse. Walking and Wining is sensational to avoid getting into conflict with the police – who likes to drive a car when he has tasted wine several times?
Besides the Tokara, we tasted the wine at the Alluvia vineyard. Here, we liked the otherwise rare Cabernet Franc very much. Our problem was that we could no longer taste the subtle nuances in the differences during the tastings.
Spier vineyard
One of the larger vineyards in the area is the Spier vineyard. The wines of Spier can be bought Africa-wide and they are very well connected in the trade. The parking lot can certainly accommodate > 100 cars and that put us off at first. Nevertheless, we did a tasting and we can highly recommend the Seaward wines and the 21 Gables reds. At the end of the day, several boxes changed hands and we stocked up for the Garden Route.
